The growing need for music therapy services for adults with IDD (intellectual and developmental disabilities), including ASD (autism spectrum disorder), calls for more research, forums, and publications in our field. In this AMTA-Pro podcast, the first of a 2-part series, speakers Jennifer Jones, Nicole Rivera, and Todd Schwartzberg encourage a renewed profession-wide emphasis on the unique needs of this expanding population. The AMTA Non-discrimination and Equal Opportunity Policy was approved by the Assembly of Delegates on November 12, 2015, demonstrating the commitment AMTA and its programs have to nondiscrimination and the promotion of equal opportunity.

The American Music Therapy Association welcomes three new Associate Editors to AMTA’s journals. Two newly created Associate Editor positions will focus on communications and dissemination of journal content, including outreach to both internal and external audiences for the many excellent articles published in the journals. Congratulations to the new Associate Editors joining the AMTA journals team.​

The American Music Therapy Association and the Certification Board for Music Therapists are excited to announce that, on April 26, 2016, Governor Fallin of Oklahoma signed into law HB 2820. This legislation creates a music therapy license under the State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.

The music therapy community lost a friend and advocate on April 25, 2016. Remo Belli was a long time supporter of the music therapy profession and he will be missed.

Marcia Humpal, chair of AMTA’s Strategic Priority on Music Therapy and ASD, tells us about the wealth of resources related to music therapy and Autism Spectrum Disorder available on the AMTA website. Listen for an overview of fact sheets, research, annotated bibliographies, reports, toolkits, brochures, journal articles, training modules, and more. Some resources are specifically for families and caregivers, some for professionals in related fields, and many for music therapists.

AMTA Past President Ronna Kaplan discusses the meaning and significance of creativity and how it fits into the work of counselors, artists, and creative arts therapists in health, education, and social service settings in her latest Huffington Post column.
 
Theodore Michael Meyer was a music lover and a student of guitar. Due to a biking accident, Theo suffered from chronic pain throughout most of his 20s. Theo benefited from Music Therapy as part of his treatment and considered going back to school to study Music Therapy to help others. Theo's family hopes that this scholarship will go to a student interested in helping individuals with mental health and/or addiction issues find a path to wellness and inspiration through the joy of music.
