The AMTA Board approved the recommendation of the Research Committee review panel, whose recommendation was to fund the research project:: “Effect of Music Assisted Relaxation Pre-Operative Training on Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) Patients’ Pain Perception after Spinal Fusion (SF) Surgery,” as the recipient of the 2012 AMTA Clinician Based Grant. The Primary Investigator is Kirsten Nelson, MT-BC, from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards announced the GRAMMY Foundation and The Recording Academy's first-ever Music Educator Award to recognize music educators for contributions to our musical landscape and positive influence on students' musical experiences. There are many music therapists who are working as music educators - perhaps you know of one who should be recognized for the outstanding work that he or she brings to the profession.

HHS has issued a letter to health care providers to ensure that they are aware of their ability under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule to take action, consistent with their ethical standards or other legal obligations, to disclose necessary information about a patient to law enforcement, family members of the patient, or other persons, when they believe the patient presents a serious danger to himself or other people.

In honor of National Day of Service, January 19, 2013, Ben is performing on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in front of a crowd of thousands of community service volunteers who are gathering from around the country. The community service he has chosen to represent is Music Therapy.

AMTA leaders, Dr. Alice-Ann Darrow and Dr. Mary Adamek worked with officials at the Kennedy Center to plan a conference exploring relationships between arts education and special education. AMTA members and others interested are encouraged to participate.

A donation to the American Music Therapy Association's disaster response program fund from the Brenda H. Kaplan Music Fund will fund music therapy services among children affected by the Newtown, CT shooting. Music therapy services will be offered in cooperation with Board Certified Music Therapists who serve Newtown area schools.
