The National Endowment for the Arts, Secretary of Health and Human Services, and Department of Defense, partner to support wounded warriors and their families by creating a music therapy program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Intrepid Center of Excellence.

The AMTA National Office will be closed for renovations as of Monday, November 19th and will reopen Wednesday, November 28th. Staff will not be accessing email or voice mail while the office is closed. In addition, there will be limited access to email and voice mail as of Wednesday, November 14th through Friday, November 16th. Thanks in advance for your patience and cooperation.
 
The Art of Securing Funding: A Grant Writing Workshop is scheduled to take place November 3 at the Redmond Library in Redmond, WA from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Registration has been open for a week to Washington State Music Therapists. Limited Registration is now open to all MT-BCs, RMTs, and CMTS interested in participating. This program is sponsored by AMTA as part of the Wilson Trust Music Therapy Project technical assistance activities to advance music therapy services in the Puget Sound Region.

Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston is marking 10 years of its music therapy program. The program involves the clinical use of music in a medical setting to accomplish therapeutic goals such as pain management, anxiety reduction and physical rehabilitation. At Shriners in Boston, the focus is on burn care for children.

AMTA staff held a conference call with 4 fabulously talented singer-songwriters known as “The Bitchin’ Babes.” The “Babes” will perform for the Opening Session at the AMTA annual conference next month. The “Babes” were fascinated to see videos depicting music therapy in action and to learn about the many populations with whom we work. They asked great questions and expressed their admiration for the valuable work of music therapists. Don’t miss what promises to be the show of a lifetime!

For the first time, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the National Academy of Sciences will co-host a public workshop that will explore the benefit of the arts to the health and well-being of older adults. The workshop is expected to help inform the NEA and the NIH of potential opportunities for research in this area.
