To support Board Certified Music Therapists' on the topic of crises, disasters, and trauma, AMTA is now offering the newest e-course, "Disaster Response for Music Therapists: Core Principles of Psychological First Aid" free to current AMTA members and non-members from now through the end of the 2016 calendar year.

In a time of mourning, shock, and anger, Team Rainbow is reaching out to the LGBTQ and Ally music therapy community to come together in reflection upon a devastating mass murder. On June 23, 2016, 9:00 pm Eastern time, Team Rainbow will host a video conference open to any music therapist or music therapy student who identifies as LGBTQAI or as an Ally to give voice to our thoughts, listen, and support each other.

The AMTA Board of Directors’ 2016 Mid-Year meeting will be held June 24, 2016 through June 26, 2016 at the Maritime Institute & Conference Center next to the Baltimore Washington International (BWI) airport. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Dianne Wawrzusin, Wawrzusin@musictherapy.org on or before Thursday, June 16th so that meeting room arrangements can be made.

The American Music Therapy Association welcomes three new Associate Editors to AMTA’s journals. Two newly created Associate Editor positions will focus on communications and dissemination of journal content, including outreach to both internal and external audiences for the many excellent articles published in the journals. Congratulations to the new Associate Editors joining the AMTA journals team.​

Marcia Humpal, chair of AMTA’s Strategic Priority on Music Therapy and ASD, tells us about the wealth of resources related to music therapy and Autism Spectrum Disorder available on the AMTA website. Listen for an overview of fact sheets, research, annotated bibliographies, reports, toolkits, brochures, journal articles, training modules, and more. Some resources are specifically for families and caregivers, some for professionals in related fields, and many for music therapists.

AMTA Past President Ronna Kaplan discusses the meaning and significance of creativity and how it fits into the work of counselors, artists, and creative arts therapists in health, education, and social service settings in her latest Huffington Post column.
 
Theodore Michael Meyer was a music lover and a student of guitar. Due to a biking accident, Theo suffered from chronic pain throughout most of his 20s. Theo benefited from Music Therapy as part of his treatment and considered going back to school to study Music Therapy to help others. Theo's family hopes that this scholarship will go to a student interested in helping individuals with mental health and/or addiction issues find a path to wellness and inspiration through the joy of music.

Music for Wellness, LLC led by music therapist Becky Watson won 3rd Place among over 47 other businesses competing in the February 10, 2016 D’Aniello Family Foundation Business Plan Competition for Veterans.​

In a new and unique position, music therapist, Lisa Gallagher began a new post working with music therapists and art therapists as well as others affiliated with the Arts & Medicine Institute to conduct and publish research.

On March 7th and 8th of 2016, AMTA once again participated in Arts Advocacy Day as a national co-sponsor. This annual event in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Americans for the Arts, is the only national event that brings together a broad cross section of America’s cultural and civic organizations, along with hundreds of grassroots advocates from across the country.
