Medical Music Therapy: Building a Program cover

AMTA is pleased to announce the launch of the new AMTA E-course, "Medical Music Therapy: Building a Program" presented by Lori Gooding, PhD, MT-BC. Information presented in this e-course in conjunction with the research literature and available resources provides a solid platform necessary to develop or expand a music therapy program in a medical setting as well as the opportunity to earn 3 CMTE credits from the American Music Therapy Association (CBMT Approved Provider #P-051).

The American Music Therapy Association is pleased to announce a call for proposals for the 2016-2017 Clinician-Based Grant (CBG). The CBG program supports applied research grants in music therapy with funding up to $5,000.

Emotion Regulation (ER) development occurs in early childhood. Music therapists encounter many clinical populations who experience barriers to healthy ER development for a variety of reasons. In this AMTA-Pro podcast, Dr. Kimberly Sena Moore reports results from a mixed methods feasibility study exploring the impact of a music‐based intervention on ER development.

Recent site visits to grantees reveal significant progress in expanding music therapy services to individuals in the Puget Sound region of Washington. The Wilson Trust Music Therapy project is a program of the American Music Therapy Association.

Congratulations to Dr. Joke Bradt (Drexel University) and her colleagues Dr. Cheryl Dileo (Temple University), Dr. Lucanne Magill (New York University) and Aaron Teague (Drexel University) for the publication of their updated Cochrane review: ‘Music Interventions for improving psychological and physical outcomes in cancer patients’. The update is highlighted as a feature review on the main website of the Cochrane Collaboration (www.cochrane.org).

On August 1, 1991, "Forever Young: Music and Aging" was heard before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging. The hearing included testimony by music therapists, musicians, physicians, legislators, and clients in support of music therapy. Click to read highlights and memories of this historic event.​

Based on their experience in successfully funding and expanding a pediatric hospital-based music therapy program through philanthropy, Dr. Annie HeiderscheIt and Jana Koppula are particularly aware of the importance of understanding the complex aspects of donor relationships in order to build and maintain a philanthropically funded program.

The AMTA Board of Directors' mid-year meeting was very productive. Highlights included 1st person accounts to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Senate Hearing on Aging; a journal report from Oxford University Press; an overall orientation; financial introduction, review of Fiscal Year 2016, approval of 2017 Budget; reports from 3 Councils & the MLE subcommittee; & reports from officers & staff. Draft motions from the 2016 Mid-Year meeting are included at the end of this report.

The unique goals of court-committed adults are being addressed in interesting ways by the team of music therapist Alison Etter and art therapist Jaimie Peterson in a forensic psychiatric hospital. In this AMTA-Pro podcast, Etter and Peterson describe a number of creative collaborative interventions giving their clients opportunities to be involved in a performances, exhibits, broadcasts, and publications. AMTA-pro is a benefit of membership in AMTA.
