In Memoriam – Dr. Edward Norwood

The Music Therapy Community Mourns the Passing of Dr. Edward L. Norwood, Former Executive Director of the National Association for Music Therapy

NorwoodEdDr. Edward (Ed) L. Norwood, former Executive Director of the National Association for Music Therapy (NAMT) died March 30, 2020 in Acworth, Georgia. Ed trained as a music therapist at the University of Georgia and served in multiple capacities including Program Director at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital and Director of Rehabilitation at The Psychiatric Institute of Washington, DC. Dr. Norwood obtained a graduate degree in Counseling Psychology at the University of Maryland and a doctorate in Organizational Psychology at Alliant International University.

NAMT was founded in 1950. Ed served with NAMT from 1982 to 1989. In 1998, less than ten years after Ed retired as Executive Director, NAMT and the American Association for Music Therapy (founded in 1971) were unified as the American Music Therapy Association.

His family, friends, and former colleagues will remember Ed’s zest for life, creativity, humor, and love of people, family, and friends.  He will be missed and always remembered.
