Announcing: Winner of 2012 Clinician Based Grant Award

The AMTA Board approved the recommendation of the Research Committee review panel, whose recommendation was to fund the research project: "Effect of Music Assisted Relaxation Pre-Operative Training on Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) Patients’ Pain Perception after Spinal Fusion (SF) Surgery," as the recipient of the 2012 AMTA Clinician Based Grant Award. The Primary Investigator is Kirsten Nelson, MT-BC, from the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a pre-operative music assisted relaxation training on patients’ pain perception after spinal fusion surgery. Patients in the experimental group will view a pre-op training program, focusing on experiencing and practicing music assisted relaxation for use post-op. All patients will receive live music assisted relaxation on post-op day 2, a highly painful day. Differences between groups on pain perception will be evaluated before and after music therapy to determine the effectiveness of the pre-op training program.
