AMTA Government Relations Update 4-12-2025
DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE:
A significant amount of AMTA government relations work involves the AMTA and CBMT State Recognition Operational Plan. Collaborating with CBMT Regulatory Affairs Advisor, Dr. Dena Register and CBMT Regulatory Affairs Associate, Dr. Kimberly Sena Moore, we support music therapy task force members across the country as they seek official recognition of music therapy and the MT-BC credential.
WHAT ADVOCACY HAS OCCURRED:
Legislation in 2025 proposing the creation of music therapy licensure or title protection has been drafted and/or introduced in the following states:
Indiana
Kentucky
Massachusetts
Michigan |
Minnesota
Mississippi
New York
North Carolina |
Pennsylvania
Texas
Wisconsin
Wyoming |
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Respond to surveys and calls-to-action from your state task force. Communicate with state legislators in your home district and educate them about the importance of music therapy for their constituents. When possible, invite them to observe music therapy in action. Offer to be a resource about healthcare and/or special education issues within your community.
CELEBRATE - Advocacy in Action:
Take a moment to thank your fellow music therapists serving on state task forces and give yourself a pat on the back for engaging in the advocacy process at any level. Attending state and regional conferences, Hill Days, virtual Town Halls, and advocacy trainings are all incredible opportunities to contribute to music therapy’s growth and learn more about increasing access to quality services provided by qualified professionals. Whether you have contacted your federal or state legislators by phone, email, or office visit, please know that AMTA and the entire music therapy community appreciates your important representation of the profession.
