AMTA Condemns Florida ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill

The American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) stands in strong opposition to harmful legislative efforts in multiple states including Florida's Parental Rights in Education “Don't Say Gay" bill. The bill bans any discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels and requires parental permission for any healthcare services students receive. Further, parents are being encouraged to take legal action against school districts believed to be in violation of the law.  

This dangerous legislation is in direct conflict with AMTA's values and known science from organizations like The Trevor Project in support of safe care to vulnerable and marginalized youth. The scope of music therapy practice is based on the values of non-maleficence, beneficence, ethical practice, professional integrity, respect, excellence, and diversity.  

For music therapy practices currently impacted by proposed or enacted laws, regulations, and/or policies that conflict with professional ethics, we encourage you to communicate your concerns with elected and appointed officials and stakeholders. AMTA will continue to use its voice to advocate with decision-makers to ensure all music therapy clients retain access to ethical and equitable treatment options.

We stand with the LGBTQIA youth affected by this bill and with the LGBTQIA community at large, recognizing their right to be affirmed and celebrated in their identities and have access to quality healthcare.
